Great Lakes Partnership Principles for Enhancing Habitat at Sediment Remediation Sites

The Great Lakes Legacy Act exemplifies a unique approach for accelerating sediment cleanup and restoring habitat in the largest system of fresh surface water in the world. Funded under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, The Great Lakes Legacy Act provides federal funding to promote cost-sharing partnerships for sediment remediation, including partnerships with State agencies and industry. This webinar from the ASTSWMO Sediments Focus Group shares the presentations made during the ASTSWMO Brownfields and Superfund Symposium in August, 2018, and it provides training on partnering with stakeholders, bridging gaps and thinking outside the box in order to leverage funding, integrate habitat improvements and revitalize tribal, recreational and economic interests.

Sediment Site Recontamination Paper

ASTSWMO’s Sediments Focus Group developed this report to evaluate efforts coordinated across CERCLA and Clean Water Act authorities that were aimed at preventing sediment recontamination. The Focus Group presents several case studies of CERCLA sites that involve a component of sediment remediation through which to explore application of collaborative recommendations jointly developed by several EPA offices.

The Clean Water Act and Sediment Remediation: Using the Data Quality Objectives Process to Help Assure that Remediated Sediment Sites are not Re-Contaminated

The ASTSWMO Sediments Focus Group developed this report for environmental authorities over both the CWA and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) in a jurisdiction including State, federal, Territorial and/or tribal decision makers. This paper suggests a planning method to help identify possible sources of pollutants that could prevent a site from reaching remedial cleanup levels, remedial action objectives and/or from being recontaminated following the implementation of a successful remedial action.

Sediment Remedy Effectiveness and Recontamination

The ASTSWMO Sediments Focus Group has produced this document that discusses causes and issues related to recontamination. Discussion topics include new contamination of sediment sites from both known sources and newly identified sources, including contamination from new chemicals or those not addressed in previous assessments, and identification of pollutants most commonly found in areas where recontamination has occurred. Also included are case studies at sediment remediation sites where inadequate source control and/or recontamination have been documented after remedy efforts have commenced.
